Animal Collective’s My Girls is #1 in Pitchfork’s Top100 tracks of ‘09

[My Girls is] Panda Bear’s promise to provide a proper house for his wife and young daughter, in the wake of his father’s death. [It] is ultimately a celebration of the simplification- of desire, of priorities- that comes with growing up.- Amanda Petrusich

This album is my most listened to in 2009. And still it took me several months — maybe half a year — to notice what any of the songs are about. I tend to automatically only listen to the melodies and compositions and completely ignore the lyrics until someone or -thing makes me aware of them.

This is somewhat sad and I know it, but I’ve come to accept that’s just how I do it. I (apparently) don’t care how the artist is feeling. I want to hear if he can make me hum along and imagine how he made all that stuff sound like this.
